One Step at a Time

Have you ever tripped because you were too busy looking behind you or ahead of you and missed the step right in front of your eyes?  It is easy to do this in life and in recovery as well.  Some are distracted by the failures of the past…the mistakes, the hurts, the pain of yesterday.  It is hard to keep up with the next step that we need to take if we are consumed by a step we missed, or a step that we tripped on in the past.  Don’t hear me wrong, there are times we need to deal with the past and look at and learn from it, and we can help you with that, but we need to be careful about becoming consumed by the past and overwhelmed by the past.  By doing that, we miss the step in front of us and we fail to enjoy the moment ahead.  There are also those who are consumed with the future.  They are looking ahead with anxiety, wondering how something will turn out.  How will I do on that job interview next week?  What will happen to my kids when they grow up?  How will I handle it if someone I love gets seriously ill?  While God gives grace and strength for the day, He does not give you grace today, for the struggles that may or may not come tomorrow!  In the anxiety of the what ifs, I can trip up just as easily as in the regrets of the what was or what could have been.  God help us to stay engaged in today, to stay focused on what is, and not on what could have been or may be. Look out!! There is a step right in front of you, that you are about to trip on!  You can do this…but only if you take it one step, one day at a time!
