Perspective Shapes your Hope!

Have you ever thought about how your perspective shapes the amount of hope you have in life? Take a moment reflect on the following ancient proverb. A young man was assigned a task of traveling by horseback to deliver some mail to a coastal village. During the middle of the journey, he passed an old farmer’s mansion with a barn stocked full of cattle and rolling fields of healthy crops. The young man waived to the farmer and said, “You have a beautiful farm!” The old farmer smiled and said, “What’s good?” Days later, the young man passed back by the farm on his journey home. To his surprise, the farm had been destroyed by a tornado. The old farmer was sitting on the rubble of his home as the young man approached and said, “I’m so sorry to see what happened to your farm!” The old farmer replied, “What’s bad?” As I reflect on his proverb, I see parallels with the book of Job. With everything taken from him but his life, Job questioned God regarding the purpose of it all. Job said, “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge? Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.” (Job 42: 2-3). Part the of battle with finding hope in life is altering our emotion-minded perceptions of our reality. God has great plans for each of us. Sometimes we simply cannot see the forest for the trees.
