Trust

It’s March Madness! My husband and I have been watching college athletes compete for the top spot in the country. It is exciting for them as they celebrate a win. Yet, it is heartbreaking when their team has worked so hard to get to the top level of competition just to come up short of their goal.

While watching a game, I noticed the advertisement on one of the scrolling screens; “Trust in tomorrow.” I am not sure whose advertising slogan that belongs to, it did catch my attention. It stopped me momentarily to think about what they were trying to say to the public.

We live in a hurry-up society. Knowledge, shopping, communication, groceries, information…are all at our fingertips. There is no point in our day where we cannot access whatever we want at a moment’s notice. No one waits for commodities for very long.

With God, there are no guarantees about a future. God has distinctly said in His word, Proverbs 27:1 (ESV) Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Another verse, Psalm 118:24 (my paraphrasing), tells us to rejoice in this day and be glad because He has made it for us. In Matthew 6:34b, Jesus tells us not to be anxious about tomorrow because it will have its own anxious moments and that today, we will have enough to be apprehensive about.

What mindfulness practices and intentional living are we incorporating into our day? Do we go outside and look up into the sky to see the clouds, feel the warmth of the sun on our face, feel the breath in our lungs, listen to the birds sing… When was the last time you went outside to just…be? To slow time down for a few moments. We trust we have this moment to live for God and to worship Him. What is holding you back?

As believers, we also have trust in our future with Jesus. He tells us in 1 Corinthians 5:1 that we have a home in heaven, which is eternal. He tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 He gives us hope and a future. Another hope He gives us is in Titus 2:13; we wait for Jesus to appear because He is our blessed hope.

We live in this dichotomy daily, which can cause tension within our bodies and souls. How are we to live each day when time seems so short? How will we prepare ourselves to be in God’s presence one day? I believe it starts with living intentional, mindful lives and thoughts. Enjoy each day as it comes, and do not rush through life, even when it becomes problematic. Slow down, breathe, look around, ground yourself in the moment and in this world God created for us.
