Truths About Lies

  1. All lies are rooted in fear, either fear of a consequence or fear of losing the status quo. (I can’t tell them the truth because I will get in trouble, or they will be disappointed.)

  2. When you lie to someone, you tell them that you think they are so stupid that they will believe the lie you just thought up. (The dog ate my homework.)

  3. The worst truth about lies is that you hate yourself when you lie to someone! You hate your reality, your life, so much that you choose to invent a new reality instead. Lying is a betrayal of oneself. It is evidence of self-loathing.

  4. If you struggle with lies that your mind is telling you, put those thoughts on trial. You can do this by asking yourself some questions. Asking yourself some of these questions will help you restructure your thoughts. The first thing to attend to is the thought that you need to question. Ask “What is the evidence for this thought? Against it?” Another question to ask yourself is “Am I basing this thought on facts or feelings?” Go on to these questions “Could I be misinterpreting the evidence? Am I making assumptions?” Ask yourself “Might other people have different interpretations of this same situation? What are they?” A final question that you could ask yourself “AmI looking at all of the evidence or what supports my thoughts?” After you have put your thoughts on trial, hopefully you will arrive at what is the truth rather than a lie.
