What is true humility lived out?

I love this quote from C.S. Lewis about a genuinely humble person, “probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him [...]. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.”

Instead of faking humility, or trying to force false modesty, we should focus on how good God is to us and be grateful to Him. We should feel humbled and thankful when we think of what Jesus has done. Whenever we try to be like Him and care about others as we care about ourselves, humility comes more naturally.

In living this out, we should celebrate the blessings and accomplishments of other people just as we celebrate and thank God for our own. In Psalms, David spoke of celebrating with others for good in their lives, and many times he rejoices over his blessings by praising God. I genuinely believe that is an example we should emulate.

Additionally, humility makes me think of Romans 12:3, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.”

Humility is the wisdom and security of knowing our place in God’s creation and love. It is not about judging or disliking ourselves! It is about having a biblical understanding of ourselves and others so that we don’t have an inflated sense of self. We need to tear down that false sense of pride that we carry around based on our financial status, appearance, or even actions. God gives us these things as blessings, and we should be grateful.

Jesus loves all of us, died for all of us, and blessed us all in many ways. True humility is about resting in that fact and living like we genuinely believe it.
